Remote Clinical Supervision Is Popular Workforce Solution With Counties

CalMHSA continues to cultivate new ideas and practical approaches to support county workforce shortages as demand grows for behavioral health services. This includes partnering with a provider successful in scaling remote supervision services in California so counties with licensed supervisor shortages can secure essential supervision for their clinical staff. 

An effective lever for clinical position recruitment and retention, the supervision program has so far provided more than 3,000 hours of sessions to pre-clinician staff from 11 counties.    

“I like the versatility of supervision over Zoom,” said one staff member from San Joaquin County. “I enjoy discussing caseload and learning from the supervisor.”  

CalMHSA’s partnership with Motivo offers counties a HIPAA-compliant platform that is dedicated solely to staff clinical supervision needs with remote supervisors who have been trained on Medi-Cal client populations within county behavioral health.

To participate, counties purchase remote supervision hours for pre-licensed staff, with the option to purchase triad supervision (two associates, one supervisor) or group supervision (three to eight associates, one supervisor). A county-level portal provides a dashboard of supervision hours for each staff.
